What’s with all the chickens, Part 3

Monday, October 17th, 2005

Or, “What to do with all the chickens”.

When I’m not drowning in assignments (almost… done… with… Physics… education… essay), I’m considering moving the chicken comics to the front page of this domain, i.e. www.stupidchicken.com, and renaming the entire strip to Stupid Chicken to fit the domain name. It’d require a drastic realignment of Chicken’s underlying motivations and overall psychological health, but I think we can deal.

Maybe in two weeks, when assignment deadlines STOP SHOWING UP AND BITCHSLAPPING ME IN THE FACE EVERY BLOODY DAY THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Back to your regularly scheduled chickens.

One last word on one more thing

Friday, October 14th, 2005

So Wednesday’s very cool Apple announcements came and went (won’t bother providing links — it’s all over the online news world), and people are bemoaning the iPod video and the iTunes video store for their lack of, well, everything (low download resolution, no DivX support, etc.).

Engadget’s The Clicker column, however, raises the likely point: it’s likely all part of Apple’s evil plan. My favourite proposition from the site that I can definitely see coming true? From “Step 3: Help drive Torrent traffic”:

What if, on the other hand, a new set of torrents emerged. Instead of files intended for all types of destination devices, these files just assume they’ll be played on the wildly popular iPod. It would be easy enough to encode iPod friendly versions. It’s just H.264 and Apple (surprise surprise) offers a $29.99 upgrade to its Quicktime Pro package which offers encoding into H.264.

All of a sudden you’ll be able to look at:

Lost.S01.E02.ipod

and know that not only will the file play on your iPod, but that it’s been optimized to do so. Suddenly, the lack of DivX support isn’t so important. In fact, by excluding DivX Apple might have given the torrent community the direction it needs to truly make iPod torrents consumer friendly.

The article goes on to mention how this would pressure content owners into coming up with better content and pricing, but I stopped paying attention after that little quote above… iPod-tailored torrent downloads! The sheer fucking brilliance of it all.

Free (as in book)*

Friday, October 14th, 2005

Coolness! I just won a copy of Neil Gaiman’s new book, Anansi Boys — it’s the hardcover edition with a signed insert by the man himself, all courtesy of the British Council. Of course, it’d be a lot cooler if I hadn’t already bought the book out of sheer impatience two weeks ago…

Ah well, least it’s the hardcover. Good read so far, too (four chapters in now — the abysmally slow pace resulting from the flood of assignments due these few weeks at NIE).

More chickens in a bit, when I scan them…

What’s with all the chickens, Part 2

Wednesday, October 12th, 2005

Since the first Antagonistic Chicken comic has been bumped into the third page of the archives at this point, and I’ve been getting questions on “what the hell is going on with that chicken you keep drawing”, I thought I should explain a little on what it’s all about.

Simply put: nothing. It really doesn’t make any sense, and it’s not supposed to. If you want a summary, sure:

‘A chicken yells “CHICKEN!” at various things that are (one would think) quite obviously not chickens.’

That is all. Enjoy.
