More ST griping
There’s been much hoo-ha about ST’s sensationalistic front-page “Minister of State says gays and their parties might be causing AIDS increase!!!” article earlier this week.
Newspapers with real opinions might have challenged the remark for its sweeping generalisation, lack of scientific evidence, or unsubstantiated nature (mrbrown comments here, acidflask dissects argument here); or better yet, not reported on it at all. The ST? They followed it up today with another unfocused, scientifically unsupported, borderline hate-mongering article (thankfully not on the front page) on how “gay parties cause hook-ups which cause AIDS!!! And also threaten family values!” They even got a quote from a mother of two, as they are wont to do when presenting opinions on gays and casinos. Her quote? “Homosexuals have rights, but not if they become virulent threats to me and my family.” I paraphrase, but only somewhat.
