Comics this week (8-14 November)

Graphic novels from this past week. Mostly superhero stuff, though Secret Identity is supposed to be all serious and thought-provoking and shit.

The Pulse: Thin Air (Vol 1)
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Mark Bagley
Published by Marvel Comics

The follow-up series to Alias, and also by Bendis. How to resist? Mark Bagley’s rendition of Luke Cage is irksome, though (inconsistent features, mainly — think white man coloured to look like a black man).

She-Hulk: Single Green Female (Vol 1)
Written by Dan Slott
Art by Juan Bobillo
Published by Marvel Comics

I’d heard this was good.

Superman: Secret Identity
Written by Kurt Busiek
Art by Stuart Immonen
Published by DC Comics

Many, many good reviews about this series — been looking forward to this for a while, but now that I have it, there just isn’t that comicbooktime every week to just sit down, relax and indulge in a good story any more. It’s sad. I blame the SAF. And recently, Halo 2.

Hey, linked from Adri’s site. My initials are YJ as well, but my surname’s Tan, so there you go. I am insanely jealous that you have Halo 2.

Shulkie’s always good. Superman: Secret Identity is VERY good. Very Elseworlds feel to it, though. Try Superman: GodFall. Phenomenal run-I believe Kinokuniya still sells it. Covers drawn by Michael Turner(WHEE!) and inside pencils by Talent Caldwell, Turner’s handpicked successor. I believe the story’s written by Jeph Loeb.

Ooh, speaking of Jeph Loeb, try the Supergirl arc from Batman/Superman. I’m collecting it and all I can say is AWESOME.

And concerning your first pick? I would advise against it. Marvel’s really stinking this year. There’s rumours they’re going to make Spidey’s webbing organic, like in the movie. Hated that to begin with, and now they want to do it to my comics?! Forget it! On top of that, the introduction of utterly pointless comics like Amazing Fantasy, in some lame attempt to cash in on the Book of Ezekiel storyline. X-men has already lost it’s appeal to me(except maybe X-treme X-men. Salvador Larroca pencils), and the introduction of the completely pointless Ultimate universes really pissed me off. Instead of a radioactive spider biting Parker, it’s some gene-gineered spider secreting some “Oz” crap? Forget it. Not worth my money. DC’s where it’s at nowadays-phenomenal storylines like GodFall, Batman/Superman and the new JLA: Classified, and on top of that, they have Michael Turner doing covers for them. What’s not to like?

Stuart Immonen’s 50 reasons to stop sketching at conventions. Don’t expect comic-book level pencils, though. They’re funny. That’s it.
